Cycling Route along the Mills around Kaag & Braassem

The polders around Kagerplassen and Braassemermeer belong to the Utrecht-Hollands peat-meadows area. Though the lots look very different here than anywhere else in the area. They are more spacious and square. The lakes also have a different history, they did not develop by land turning into peat, but by a natural process of erosion of the shore. Windmills needed to keep the swampy peat soils and the legs of the livestock dry. And don’t forget to alight at a Windmill. If the blades are rotating, the miller is at home.
